HISTORY

Amos Otis, the original owner of this property, was a leader during the progressive mid-1800's on Cape Cod and was also a prolific writer of early Cape history and the indigenous peoples of the area. He was a farmer, salt manufacturer and taught school in Yarmouth Port. Eventually he became one of the founders of the Barnstable Bank and then of the Barnstable County Mutual Fire Insurance company. This insurance company, set up in 1833 and housed initially within these walls, was one of the original mariner insurance firms in the United States. It was organized to predominantly serve the many Sea Captains of Cape Cod and indeed the whole east coast, hence how our Inn got its name.

Amos Otis is also known as being a descendant of James Otis, a delegate to the Continental Congress, who played an important role in the American Revolution and is probably best remembered for his statement to King George III...
